Sensational jazz rock and soft rock artists Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers are bringing their signature sounds to the PNC Bank Arts Center!
Steely Dan was formed in 1972 by Walter Becker (guitarist, bassist and co-songwriter) and Donald Fagen (lead singer and co-songwriter). They met when Donald was passing by a café in New York and heard Walter playing electric guitar. Donald recounted the experience in an interview saying, “I hear this guy practicing, and it sounded very professional and contemporary. It sounded like, you know, like a black person, really.” He introduced himself to Walter and they discovered they had similar tastes in music and the pair decided to write songs together. The band’s line up has changed many times over the years but Walter and Donald have always been at its core. Their musical style is best described as a blend of jazz rock (a genre that was developed in the late 1960s by jazz musicians experimenting with the addition of rock rhythms and electric instruments to harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and instrumentational elements from jazz tradition) and soft rock. They’re well-known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio and they’ve had a stellar career with over 40 million albums sold worldwide.
